Respected LadyLand Radio Show
Spotlighting Women in the Golden Age of the Recording Industry
Above all else, the Respected LadyLand Radio Project is designed to be a vacation from sexism. It's a mythical destination where women are actually RESPECTED & valued, rather than resented, tormented, vilified, or shoved aside. This is the ANTI-misogyny radio show. All are welcome to visit Respected LadyLand. Just check any bigotry at the gate.
On this radio show women take center stage. Each episode has a different topic or theme. Sometimes I focus on the recorded output of a specific person, or I might play songs of a certain subject matter.
This radio project celebrates the auditory achievements of mid-century women in the U.S. and beyond, centering the often-overlooked contributions of women working behind the scenes as well as performers, while occasionally touching on rarely mentioned insights into more familiar figures.
Focusing on the golden age of record production (the 1950s through the 1970s) the show examines an era when women were especially excluded from power and meaningful representation in the industry.
As much as this show is about those women who were able to make it through the gauntlet to make an in-roads in the industry, it’s also about all the women you will never learn about because their contributions were never credited. This show is a recognition of the talented women musicians who were never recorded because they weren’t even considered. Period.
It’s also dedicated to the women who wanted to be music-makers but were discouraged because it wasn’t something “ladies” were supposed to do, because it wasn’t practical enough, or because they simply didn’t have the support. This series acknowledges the women whose careers were quashed, stunted, or derailed because they weren’t taken seriously, were resented for existing in the industry, or were seen as a threat to those in power.
I am a music enthusiast who specializes in mid century records. By diving even deeper into exploring the contributions made by women locally and globally, I aim to build on my knowledge acquired over a 30 year career as a DJ who's worked in various arms of the music industry. I don't know where this exploration will take me, but as always, I intend to let the music lead me. I hope you'll join me on this journey!
