The music of Justine "Baby" Washington exemplifies the uptown soul sound - sophisticated, intricate, dramatic arrangements with vocals big enough to bring down Broadway. In many ways her best remembered solo records like "That's How Heartaches Are Made" and "The Clock" were a continuation of the sentimental doo wop ballads she recorded with the Hearts at the start of her career. But as far as I'm concerned, where she truly excelled was in songs she wrote that seemed to be anthems for the alienated.
As a bonafide weirdo, I really relate to her songs. To borrow a phrase, I don't know her but I feel like she knows me. It's not secret that you can learn a lot about a person by the music they treasure, and I love the hell out of Baby Washington!
And so today, on her 74th birthday, I would like to thank her for singing the soundtrack of my heart. The Record of the Day is one of those songs.

I'm excited to highlight some of my favorite records in a variety of genres (soul, R&B, classic country, rockabilly, oldies, garage rock, etc). These won't all necessarily be "dance" records per se. They will all be records that I believe deserve a special listen. I simply love good music, rare or not. Hopefully you will spend some time here and love music right along with me! Lets give this a shot!
